The first courtyard

Beyond the external wall visitors come to the First Courtyard, which is surrounded by buildings from different periods
- the Palace of Nicolò, built in the 12th century on existing medieval foundations by a descendent of Bozone, the first lord to have received the castle in fief from the Bishop Prince of Trento in 1163. The Bozone family governed the castle from the 12th to the 13th centuries and raised the first buildings within the existing walls;
- the Palazzo di Levante and the Edificio Nuovo, built on medieval structures in the 19th century by the Austrian government. At this time the building, by then in a state of disrepair, was used as the headquarters of the Offices of the Austro-Hungarian Empire for controlling the region;
- the Palazzo Nuovo, built in the 13th century under Bishop Prince Federico Vanga.
