Castello del Buonconsiglio monumenti e collezioni provinciali

Stoves and Majolica

The museum conserves an unusual collection of stoves and majolica tiles for stoves. In the Germanic and Alpine world, the stove has always constituted a valuable furnishing and its decoration was often a very high-level art form.

The collection consists of many works, mostly of Trentino and southern Tyrol manufacture, from the Renaissance to the late 18th century. Most noteworthy among these are two stoves by Bartolomäus Dill Riemenschneider (1530s) and tiles with the heraldic devices from the 15th to the 17th centuries. Also of importance are the floor tiles created for the Buonconsiglio castle, some datable to 1532, and others dated 1688 that were originally made for the Giunta Albertiana.
