The Museum has a rich collection of coins and medals acquired from findings, donations and purchases. The majority of the coins belonged to collections that were formed between the 19th and first half of the 20th century by members of some Trentino noble families. The collection is made up of thousands of coins, numerous medals, seals, tipari, badges, tokens and small plaques. Some pieces are extremely rare and valuable. The collection dates from the 4th century B.C., with monetary issue from ancient Greek mints, up to the 19th century with Italian and foreign coins.
The central nucleus of the collection consists of coins from the Roman and medieval periods, the latter minted at the beginning of the mid-12th century in Trento, Merano and Bressanone. There are also coins minted by the prince-bishops, and in subsequent years, even from foreign mints. The quantity and quality of the numismatic and medal patrimony, of great scientific interest and of important economic value, qualifies the Castello del Buonconsiglio museum collection as one of the most impressive in this sector, even on an international level.
