Castel Thun

The Castle - Residence and Fortress

Located on a hilltop overlooking the Non Valley, Thun Castle is the harmonious result of various evolutive phases. It is surrounded by a vast system of fortifications consisting of towers, walls, ramparts and moats, with extensive rolling gardens that soften its look. Beyond the mighty Porta Spagnola (Spanish Gate) is the drawbridge and the courtyard with the imposing and elegant residence. The series of interior rooms display the rich original furnishings and an interesting collection of the family’s paintings. The most renowned room is the 16th century Stanza del Vescovo (Bishop’s Room) that is entirely panelled in Swiss Pine; there are also kitchens, a weapons room, living rooms and bedrooms. The castle has always been lived in, and has always been conserved as a furnished residence. After the collapse of the Trentino family, it passed into the hands of the Bohemien branch of the family in 1926. After the death of the last Thun resident, Zdenko Franz Thun Hohenstein, the Province of Trento decided in 1992 to acquire the monument, its rich art collection, the valuable library, and its extraordinary archive.
