The Fortress: from the entrance to the dark gate

The fortress is organized around the main complex with a boundary wall on the external lines there are the first and the second stone gate.

Passing through the second gate with its rooms for the guard corps, the so called “tournament field” can be seen on the right: it is, in fact, an area which guaranteed the best defense of the castle on the site most exposed to enemy attack.

Continuing along the path protected by another wall and which winds its way around the foot of this imposing fortress built on the rock, you pass the massive bastion, which testifies with the others 2 to the period in which the castle was restored by the Trapps family with stronger structures more appropriate to the new defensive criteria necessitated by the use of the firearms.

The third gate, known as “scura” (dark), which gives access to the fortress, opens north of the bastion. The defensive function of this entrance is further strengthened by its depth and by the presence of three gates placed in close succession on a slope, and such an angle as to deprive the attacker of the necessary visibility.
