The Fortress: from the First Courtyard to the Ground Square

The “dark gate” leads to the first courtyard. This area of the building, once called ajone (barn), today houses the museum bookshop.

The visit continues up to the path, from which you can enjoy a wonderful panorama of the surrounding area. the view ranges westwards to the Adige Valley, and eastwards, in the valley leading to the province of Vicenza beyond the plateau of Folgaria.

Through a gate with an harquebusier and a machicolation with a flamboyant arch one arrives at the Grand Square, overlooked by an imposing, noble building, residence of the Trapp family.

In the façade you can still see the battlements which crowned an ancient medieval building.

It was here, right at the highest point of the rock that there was once one of the two original fortifications built on the hill which, according to sources, belonged to two distinct branches of the Beseno family. The family lost control around the end of the 13. century when, following internal quarrels, it passed to the Prince-Bishop of the Trentino and, later on, to the Castelbarcos, the noble family of Vallagarina.
