The Garden Stairs and the Ground Floor

Returning to the first floor of the Magno Palazzo to the Loggia del Romanino, on the landing near the staircase, the artist Girolamo Romanino alternates allegorical, mythological and genre themes. Portrayed are the imposing images of Portia and Dido, the allegories of Avarice and Prodigality; above the door are the allegories of Immodesty (Venus disarms Cupid protected by a lady of the court) and Chastity (Lady with unicorn).

Along the wall of the staircase, leaning against a trompe-l’oeil balcony, are the court jester playing with a monkey, an elegantly dressed man, a Magno Palazzo work supervisor paying the workmen, the eldest of which is portrayed with remarkable realism. On the staircase’s ceiling is portrayed a graceful Diana framed by two magnificent monochromes with mythological themes. On the lower part is a sensual theme of a satyr advancing on a sleeping nymph.
Descending the stairs, one reaches a vaulted room that opens onto the garden.
