This pleasant open area within the Magno Palazzo is on the first floor, surrounded by stone walls on three sides and the Loggia del Romanino on the fourth. Its name derives from the two sculpted stone lions, an allusion to the Clesian coat of arms, that are all that remain of the 16th century fountain. The fountain was the work of the sculptor, Alessio Longhi who had an important role in the work carried out on the Castle.
On the eastern side, that follows the contours of the city walls, are Zaccaria Zacchi’s terracotta decorations of the heads of illustrious people from ancient times. On the southern side above the arches of the Loggia, are splendid stone medallions sculpted by Alessio Longhi depicting the profiles of Maximillian I, Philip the Fair King of Spain, Charles V and Ferdinand I of Austria.
